Western Thistle

(Cirsium occidentale)

There are now considered to be five varieties of this lovely plant, most of which grow in disturbed places in woodlands and open forest in the California Coast Ranges. Flowers range in color from electric blue-violet to ruby red, rising in striking contrast above gray-green or even pure white foliage and conspicuous, dense cobwebby hairs.
