We saw these in full bloom in late July in a campground near the Klamath, upstream from Weitchepec. The tufted flower stalks seemed incandescent under the firs, illuminating the late afternoon forest. The next day at the Hoopa Valley Tribal Museum we saw the intricate, water-proof baskets woven by the women of that area from the tough wiry leaves of the plant. These baskets were particularly pliable and durable and a sought-after trade item.
