Big Leaf Maple
(Acer macrophyllum)
One of the first trees to show life in the late winter, its swelling chartreuse buds are often silhouetted against the dark skies, giving promise of spring to come. To the sharp- eyed observer, the long streams of green flowers, and then the rapidly unfolding leaves are welcome evidence of the advancing season. In late summer, the dark hillsides are dotted with the yellow of the turning Maple leaves, once again an early messenger of the coming season.
